Abstract
This study aims to provide a basic framework for adolescent alcohol prevention through testing a path model between major variables explaining teenage drinking in Korea within the framework of social learning theory. For the purposes of the study, major variables related to social learning theory such as social/environmental factors, coping skills, and cognitive factors were selected on the basis of identified relative importance among variables related to adolescent drinking, to identify a path model. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed and collected from students of 13 high schools located in 10 cities and provinces nationwide. Data from 968 students were used for analysis. Results showed that the path model between the factors that affect adolescent drinking designed on the basis of social learning theory was significant. As for the relationship between factors consisting the path model, alcohol outcome expectancy was found not only to act as a mediator between social/environmental factors and coping skills, but also found to play a key role with its direct effect in drinking behavior among adolescents. Social/ environmental factors and coping skills were also identified to have significant effect on alcohol outcome expectancy as well as drinking behaviors. And in particular, coping skills represented by leadership was found to be the most influential factor on the amount of alcohol consumption. In summary, not one or two specific factors, but various factors were found to affect adolescent drinking behaviors, and these factors had an effect on drinking behaviors through various paths. In order to prevent alcohol related problems among adolescents, a comprehensive program concerning various relationship among factors related to drinking behaviors is necessary, and a prevention model reflecting multi-dimensional social environment of teenagers should be developed.
